Champions League matches this week will begin with a moment of tribute for the victims of the devastating flash floods and landslides in Nepal. European football’s governing body UEFA has decided to honour those affected by the disaster before all 18 fixtures scheduled across the opening week of the competition. A banner will also be displayed as a sign of soliarity and support.

“A moment of silence will be held, and a banner will be displayed as a sign of solidarity and support ahead of all UEFA Champions League matches this week.”
“The banner will carry the message “You are not alone Nepal”,” read the statement from UEFA.
The devastating floods in Nepal were set off by an ice and rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, causing widespread destruction across parts of northern and central Nepal.
The swelling Bhotekoshi River tore through towns and villages, sweeping away houses and vehicles while severely damaging roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure in its path.
Nepal’s flash flood disaster claimed more lives on Monday, with the death toll climbing to 1,355 as recovery teams continued to find bodies in the worst-hit regions, authorities said.
Search operations are still underway for 4,996 missing people, including at least 589 foreign nationals. Meanwhile, rescue teams have managed to save 13,396 people so far, according to figures released by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
This is not the first time UEFA has paid tribute to victims of tragedies beyond Europe. Similar gestures were made in September 2023 following the deadly earthquake in Morocco and the devastating floods in Libya.
The new Champions League campaign gets underway on Tuesday with six matches on the opening day, including Real Madrid’s high-profile clash with Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu. Six more games are scheduled for Wednesday, with the remaining six fixtures to be played on Thursday.
