Ukraine launched one of its biggest drone attacks on Russia since Moscow’s invasion more than four years ago, firing almost 800 drones overnight, officials said on Tuesday. The strike came just two days after a similar barrage, as both sides continue long-range attacks while fighting along the roughly 1,250-kilometre front line in eastern and southern Ukraine remains constrained by drones and ground robots.

At the same time, a Russian missile strike on the village of Pechenihy in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region killed at least 10 civilians, officials said. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described it as “a brutal attack”, while authorities also reported deaths and injuries in Ukraine’s Sumy region over the past day.

Over the past year, Ukraine has developed and deployed domestically produced long-range drones for strikes deep inside Russia. Kyiv says such attacks are meant to make the Russian public feel the consequences of the war and to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into peace talks, though Putin has shown no sign of intending to stop the invasion. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X: “Putin continues to drag out the war instead of accepting Ukraine’s realistic ceasefire proposals and ending the bloodshed.”

Russia’s Defence Ministry said air defences overnight intercepted 791 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions, as well as annexed Crimea and the Black and Azov seas. According to an Associated Press tally, it was the second-largest drone attack since January 2025. More than 600 Ukrainian drones flew towards the Moscow region, where 180 were shot down, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, without giving further details. Officials reported no deaths or major damage, though Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said three people were injured.

The overnight attack also caused a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in an industrial zone. Ukraine has repeatedly targeted the company’s depots, which it says help supply the Russian military. Wildberries said the facility suffered “insignificant damage.”

In Ukraine, Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, said preliminary information showed that 10 civilians were killed in the missile strike on Pechenihy. He later said 17 people were wounded. Zelenskyy said the attack damaged 10 homes, a cafe, a post office, a store and at least seven vehicles. “We will definitely respond to this Russian strike,” he said on social media.

Ukraine’s National Police also said three people were killed and three others were wounded in Russian attacks on the Sumy region over the past day, including drone strikes and a blast caused by an explosive device. The latest exchanges showed both countries continuing major aerial attacks, with Ukraine striking deep inside Russia and Russia hitting civilian areas in Ukraine.
