A 52-year-old college laboratory attendant was shot dead during an altercation over a disputed property in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Thursday, October 15, officials told news agency Press Trust of India.

The family of the deceased, identified as Satish Kumar Srivastava, alleged that Additional Government Advocate Devendra Nath Mishra shot him with his licensed revolver. The dispute was allegedly over Nazul land in the city’s Salori area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Sagar Jain told PTI that Mishra, who represents the Uttar Pradesh government before the Allahabad High Court, reached the disputed property on Thursday afternoon and broke a lock allegedly put up by Srivastava. This led to an altercation between the two sides.

During the dispute, a shot was fired and Srivastava was hit in the abdomen, leaving him critically injured, Jain said. His family took him to SRN Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Srivastava worked as a laboratory attendant at Ishwar Sharan Degree College.

Jain said police had begun the process of registering a case under relevant sections of the law based on a complaint filed by Srivastava’s family. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination.

Some people allegedly involved in the incident have been taken into custody for questioning, while three police teams have been formed to trace the other accused, Jain told PTI. Police are also examining footage from CCTV cameras installed around the disputed property.

Ambuj Mishra, the lawyer representing Srivastava, alleged that Devendra Nath Mishra, his wife and two sons assaulted Srivastava and his family members. He said he was at the Allahabad High Court when he received a phone call about the alleged assault.

Ambuj Mishra claimed that when he reached the spot, he saw the family members being assaulted and Salori police outpost in-charge Vinay Yadav holding Devendra Nath Mishra from behind. He further alleged that Devendra Nath Mishra then took out his licensed revolver and shot Srivastava.

The lawyer also claimed that before the shooting, Devendra Nath Mishra’s son Nitendra attacked Srivastava with a bamboo stick. The blow allegedly missed Srivastava and struck Devendra Nath Mishra, injuring him. Devendra Nath Mishra is undergoing treatment at Bailey Hospital, he added.

Police said a detailed investigation was under way into the fatal shooting linked to the property dispute, with suspects being questioned, CCTV footage under examination and teams searching for the other accused.
