The US Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed President Donald Trump’s administration to continue deporting people to countries other than their own for now, while the justices consider whether the policy is legal.
The court said it will hear arguments on whether migrants must be given a meaningful chance to object before being sent to countries where they have no ties. Its order, for the time being, puts on hold a ruling by an appeals court.

Federal attorneys said the lower court’s decision had forced the cancellation of a deportation flight carrying about 70 people to three countries. The justices had earlier allowed such deportation flights, a key policy of the Trump administration, to continue temporarily when the case came before them last year.
Under a series of often secret agreements, the Trump administration has deported about 25,000 people to more than two dozen countries, including Liberia and Guyana. The vast majority have been sent to Mexico.
The Republican administration has said it sends people with final deportation orders to third countries when they cannot be returned to their homelands or when their native countries will not accept them, including those with criminal convictions. Federal attorneys said those governments provide assurances that people will not be persecuted or tortured.
Lawyers for the immigrants, however, said some migrants have ended up imprisoned in countries they had never heard of before arriving there. They said some also face serious safety risks and are left with little choice except to return to the countries they had fled. According to the attorneys, many of them have no criminal convictions and have been found to be at risk of torture or persecution.
The case comes as the Trump administration pursues a sweeping immigration crackdown and has pledged to deport millions of people living in the United States illegally. For now, the Supreme Court has allowed the third-country deportations to continue while it examines whether migrants must be given a real opportunity to challenge such removals.
