The victim of a mining tragedy has been remembered as a deeply loved and devoted father as a local community starts to rally around his grieving family.
Andreas Loizou, known to his loved ones as “Carpet”, died a fortnight ago in a horrific mining incident at the Peak Downs site in Moranbah, in Central Queensland.
The 54-year-old was a passenger in a utility vehicle when it ended up in a crash with a haulage truck on one of the access roads to the site.
Now, two weeks on from the tragedy, tributes have been paid via a fundraising page in his memory and in support of his children.
“In the wake of the heartbreaking news of the loss of Andreas ‘Carpet’ Loizou under such tragic circumstances, Jacob and Sophie have lost a deeply loved and devoted father far too soon,” the GoFundMe reads.
“While nothing can ever ease the pain of losing someone so special, we hope to help them as they navigate this unimaginable time of grief.”
Tributes have also been made by members of the mining community following the tragic events of July 24.
“The Mining and Energy Union was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of a fatality at Peak Downs in the early hours of Friday, July 24,” a statement on the union’s website reads.
Mr Loizou’s employer, Thiess, offered sympathies after confirming the news on Facebook.
“Early this morning, there was an incident at Peak Downs mine that resulted in the passing of one of our team members, Andreas ‘Andrew’ Loizou,” the statement read.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Andrew’s family, loved ones, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
The tragedy has sparked an investigation by Resources Safety and Health Queensland, which will publish findings in due course.
