Five people had a narrow escape after a passenger-laden tempo plunged into a water-filled drain in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra amid heavy rain and severe waterlogging. The vehicle, carrying the driver and four passengers, suddenly went off the road and into the drain, triggering panic among those at the spot.
The incident took place in the Nagla Bihari area of Agra, where the tempo was travelling towards Prakash Nagar. With rainwater covering the road, the boundary between the road and the drain had become almost impossible to see. The driver reportedly lost control, causing the tempo to plunge into the water-filled pit.

As the vehicle went into the drain, screams rang out and chaos broke out at the scene. Local residents rushed to the spot and immediately began rescue efforts.
Police teams from Trans Yamuna and Etmaddaula police stations soon arrived and joined the rescue operation. After a strenuous effort, police and locals managed to pull all five people out of the trapped tempo. The injured were subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
A crane was later brought in to recover the tempo from the drain.
The pit had reportedly been dug for the construction of a sewage treatment plant and became filled with rainwater following continuous showers. With water also covering the road, the open pit became difficult to distinguish, creating a deadly trap for motorists.
The timely intervention of local residents and police helped prevent what could have been a major tragedy.
