Nearly one-and-a-half years after the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old postgraduate resident physician, RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has been embroiled in a controversy once again. This time, a video has gone viral showing a Group D employee of the state-run hospital having food and alcohol inside the hospital’s emergency department.

In the video, the man, who has now been identified as Ranjit Gosai, was heard saying that he held close ties with the outgoing Minister of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Shashi Panja. He also claimed to be a loyal Trinamool Congress worker at heart.

“Madam (Shashi Panja) acknowledges me a lot. By heart, I am also a TMC worker,” said Ghoshai, who is now under scrutiny after the video went viral on social media and triggered controversy. Internet users flagged a disciplinary violation on the hospital premises.

Gosai, however, defended himself against all the allegations. The staff said that the video was old, and it is now being circulated on the internet to tarnish his image. Adding further, he said that his job was to help poor patients with admission-related issues.

The Group D staff also added that he did not know who uploaded the video on social media or for what purpose.

Following the incident, India Today reached out to the hospital authorities. The management said that they were aware of the video and had already taken strict action against the employee. A further probe is underway to ascertain who else was involved in the incident.
