The parents of top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Abid Ramzan Sheikh were seen waving the Tricolour and unfurling it on the rooftop of their home in Shopian as the country celebrated its 80th Independence Day.

Sheikh is said to be operating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) and figures on the security forces’ most-wanted list in Kashmir for his alleged involvement in several terror incidents in the Valley.

He is also known to have ordered targeted attacks on non-local labourers in Kashmir. The flag-hoisting at Sheikh’s family home drew attention against this backdrop, with both his father and mother seen participating in the ceremony.

The development recalls another Independence Day event in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021, when Muzaffar Wani, the father of slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, hoisted the Tricolour. Muzaffar Wani, a teacher and then principal of a government school, had unfurled the national flag at the school and stood for the national anthem along with other teachers.

Burhan Wani was one of the most prominent faces of militancy in the Kashmir Valley, particularly among young people. He was in his early 20s when killed along with two other militants in an encounter and his death sparked widespread violence in the valley.

Meanwhile, Independence Day celebrations were held peacefully across Jammu and Kashmir.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his Independence Day speech, asserted that his government was committed to restoring statehood and other constitutional guarantees to Jammu and Kashmir, which were revoked in August 2019.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday hoisted the national flag at Lok Bhavan to mark India’s 80th Independence Day. He emphasised that citizens must unite to foster an inclusive society that prioritises public interest and extends compassion to the underprivileged.
