A CCTV camera that had been switched off, 258 calls with a key accused and a series of movements on the night of the murder have emerged as some of the key clues being examined by police in the murder of Kanpur businessman Vineet Minocha.
The investigation took a new turn on Wednesday when police arrested Subrat, the son of the Kanpur businessman, on suspicion of being involved in the alleged conspiracy. Police said several facts and circumstantial evidence that emerged during the probe led them to bring Subrat under the scanner.

Subrat has not confessed to the murder, according to sources. Police said they arrested him after questioning him alongside his wife Shalu and former employee Vishal following the accused being taken on remand.
Police Commissioner Raghuveer Lal also questioned the accused for several hours.
WHY DID POLICE SUSPECT SUBRAT?
One of the key points being examined by the police is the CCTV system at Subrat’s house. According to police, the CCTV had been switched off since July 22.
Investigators suspect it may have been deliberately disabled, although police said this can be conclusively established only after the investigation is completed.
Police are also examining the movements of the accused on the night of the murder.
According to the police timeline:
8:59 pm: Subrat and Shalu left their house.
9:46 pm: Vishal and another accused entered Vineet Minocha’s house.
9:56 pm: Subrat and Shalu reached Cosmos Inn.
10:58 pm: Vineet Minocha entered the house.
Police are trying to establish whether these movements were connected and how they fit into the sequence of events surrounding the murder.
VISHAL’S LINKS WITH SUBRAT UNDER SCANNER
Police said Vishal had earlier been removed from his job after being accused of theft. Despite this, he remained in contact with Subrat and continued doing work for him.
According to sources, Vishal had repeatedly called and messaged Vineet and Nisha seeking forgiveness. Vineet later blocked him, the sources said.
Police are now examining the communication between Vishal, Shalu and Subrat as part of the investigation.
FINANCIAL PRESSURE AND ALLEGED WORKPLACE DISPUTE
Police are also examining Subrat’s financial circumstances as a possible angle in the case.
According to police sources, Subrat received around Rs 25,000 from his father, while Shalu received around Rs 15,000. Investigators are looking into whether their financial requirements exceeded these amounts.
Police are also examining an allegation that Subrat had sold items from his office without informing others and kept the money.
On June 12, Vineet Minocha allegedly caught Subrat over the issue and reprimanded him.
SUBRAT HAD MORE THAN Rs 20 LAKH IN DEBT
According to sources, Subrat had debts of more than Rs 20 lakh. The borrowings being examined by police include:
Around Rs 5 lakh from Money View
Around Rs 75,000 from ICICI
Around Rs 3 lakh from Navi
Around Rs 9.5 lakh borrowed from a friend, Harshit
Police are also looking into allegations that Subrat drank alcohol and gambled, and whether his spending habits and financial pressures had any bearing on the case.
GOA TRIP AND MISSED AWARD CEREMONY
According to sources, Subrat had travelled to Goa to receive an award from Pfizer.
However, a police investigation has found that he went drinking and to a casino and, allegedly due to excessive intoxication, did not attend the award ceremony the following day.
258 CALLS BETWEEN VISHAL AND SUBRAT
Call records have also emerged as an important part of the investigation.
According to the police:
Around 28 calls were exchanged between Vishal and Shalu.
Around 258 calls between Vishal and Subrat are being examined.
Vishal allegedly used a new SIM card shortly before the incident and after the murder. Police said five calls from that number were made only to Subrat’s number.
Police are treating the call records as circumstantial evidence and examining their connection with the murder.
WHY DID SUBRAT AND SHALU INITIALLY DENY RECOGNISING VISHAL?
Another question before investigators is why Subrat and Shalu initially denied recognising Vishal when shown his CCTV image.
According to sources, Shalu later identified Vishal when shown the image for the second and third time.
Police are now examining why the two did not identify him initially if Subrat already knew Vishal.
WHAT POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING NOW
Following Subrat’s arrest, police are examining the links between his alleged contact with Vishal, the CCTV at his house being switched off, call records, his financial liabilities and the movements of the accused on the night of the murder.
Investigators are attempting to connect these pieces of circumstantial evidence and establish Subrat’s alleged role, if any, in the murder conspiracy.
