Anthony Albanese has wished Pope Leo XIV a “quick recovery” after the 71-year-old pontiff underwent surgery for lung cancer.

The Vatican revealed Pope Leo’s adenocarcinoma diagnosis on Wednesday (AEDT), saying he had undergone surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung.

“The surgery was successful, and there were no complications,” it said in a statement.

“He is a voice for peace, humanity and reason in our modern world,” Mr Albanese posted on social media.

“My thoughts and prayers are with him as he recovers from his recent surgery.

“We hope and pray for a quick recovery.”
