One of Western Australia’s busiest airports, Jandakot Airport, has reopened at first light this morning after a direct lightning strike forced the facility to shut overnight.
Yesterday’s wild weather damaged almost all of the cables to lights on runway and taxi areas, meaning aircraft departing or landing at night would not be able to see the runway or ground markings.
The airport is regularly used by emergency services including WA Police air wing, the RAC rescue helicopter, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Flights are expected to resume as normal this morning as crews rush to have the runway lights back up and running by tonight.

Making headlines today, the future of 850,000 Perth residents’ household waste is up in the air as the closure of the Tamala Park Waste Facility faces yet another hurdle.
The facility, run by the Mindarie Regional Council, accepts one-third of Perth’s household waste from seven local governments and was due to reach the end of its operational life around 2028.
But two major components – a piggyback liner and leachate management area – are needed to bring the area up to its full capacity. And the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has just rejected the Mindarie council’s request.
