It’s been a chilly morning in Perth today, with the mercury dipping to just 0.6 degrees in Pearce.
In the CBD, the temperature dropped to 4.5 degrees overnight, while it dipped to 1.2 at Perth Airport this morning, and 1.8 degrees in Jandakot. It was even colder in the Swan Valley where a low of 1.1 degrees was recorded this morning at around 7am.
The temperatures are about four degrees colder than what is normal for this time of year, with a very cold pool of air behind a cold front responsible for what will be a week of colder mornings and low maximum temperatures in the teens.
The front is causing the temperatures to feel even colder than what is being recorded, with the ‘feels like’ temperature in Pearce this morning reaching -1.7 degrees. Perth felt like 2.4 degrees, and the Swan Valley felt like -0.6 degrees.
The Bureau is predicting the colder mornings will stick around for the rest of the week, with minimums of 5 degrees predicted until Friday.
Here’s what’s making news across the nation and around the world today:
Good morning and welcome to our live news blog for this Tuesday, the 16th of June.
Making headlines today, West Australian billionaire Gina Rinehart wants to mine coal in the Rocky Mountains, and one of Canada’s most famous country music singers has built a coalition of ranchers, fishermen and environmentalists to stop the project.
A unit of Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting is seeking government permission to reopen the Grassy Mountain mine in Alberta to extract coal used in steel production.
The project has been previously rejected because of concerns it would damage water quality and harm wildlife. Hancock’s not alone. Separately, Valory Resources wants to dig for metallurgic coal nearby.
