The Australian Workers’ Union has today applied for a protected action ballot order, as tensions over the pay and conditions experienced by workers at BHP’s port operations at Port Hedland in the Pilbara ramps up.

The proposed strike action for up to 24 hours, at the world’s largest iron ore export hub, could cost the company up to $120 million.

Australian Workers Union Acting WA Secretary Craig Beveridge said members had expressed clear frustration with BHP’s intransigent approach to bargaining.

“We have spoken extensively to our members on site. They want BHP to stop whingeing and start taking their concerns seriously,” Beveridge said.

Here’s what’s making headlines today:

  • Fresh from assuring Australia she stands for the little, hard-pressed people, Pauline Hanson accepted another gift from billionaire Gina Rinehart on Thursday.
  • US Vice President JD Vance has excoriated Israeli criticism of the American-led peace deal with Iran, saying President Donald Trump is the only world leader who is still sympathetic to Israel, and that critics need to “wake up” to the country’s friendless reality.
  • A drone strike on a Moscow oil depot has set off a fiery blast that sent the lid of a storage tank high into the air, in a new demonstration of Ukraine’s ability to reach targets deep inside Russia.
  • A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy ended up in a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in central England on Thursday, resulting in him sustaining critical injuries, police said.
  • Grill’d is facing worker demands to retract and apologise for a suggestive new advertising campaign that has been accused of sexualising women and putting female staff at risk of harassment.

Good morning all and welcome to another live vlog.
