The Wallaroos may have to count the cost of ACT Brumbies’ 42-25 loss to Fijian Drua after star flyhalf Ella Ryan suffered a potential leg injury in the Super Rugby Women clash.
Ryan, who debuted for Australia in April, was looking to make a try-saving tackle when she awkwardly clattered into a barnstorming Salaseini Railumu in the second half at Four R Stadium in Ba, Fiji on Saturday.
The 23-year-old was left gripping her knee with an agonising grimace on her face before she gingerly hobbled off the field with the support of doctors.
Ryan’s potential loss for the Brumbies would deal a significant blow to their finals hopes as they have just one match remaining to lock in a top-four spot, having missed out on the post-season last year.
Winger Ashlea Bishop was a shining light for the visitors, scoring a first-half hat-trick to strengthen her case for a Wallaroos call-up.
The Brumbies were looking to beat the Drua for the first time, only for the hosts to score three of the game’s first four tries.
The visitors rallied to finish the half strongly though, as Bishop and centre Bonnie Brewer crossed to make it 20-20 at the break.
The Brumbies looked to continue their momentum into the second half, but a blistering tear by winger Atelaite Buna swung the dial back in Drua’s favour.
From there, flanker Railumu, prop Karalaini Naisewa and winger Repeka Tove all crashed over for the home team.
After the full-time siren, inside centre Josivini Naihamu intercepted the ball and ran about 70 metres to seal the bonus-point win and cement Fiji’s spot inside the top four.
