Wayne Rooney admits his marriage with Coleen is “not always easy”.

The 40-year-old retired footballer and his wife, also, 40, are letting fans see behind closed doors with their new Disney+ series The Real Rooneys, and the couple were determined to show what life is really like.

As quoted by Closer magazine, Wayne said: “There’s times we’ve been arguing, and I think that’s important to put in. In truth, behind closed doors, it’s not perfect.

“There are issues, which any married couple has to deal with, and this shows only a small percentage of what we’re like.

“We have arguments, we have good times. It’s our married life with four boys. It’s not always easy.”

Coleen agreed, but insisted their love for each other is what’s kept them going.

She added: “The main thing is love’s always been there. People are too quick to give up on working at things.

“We’ve had plenty of times where we could have said, ‘Right, that’s it, we’re done’ – but we still love each other, we’ve got a connection.”

Wayne and Coleen first met when they were 12 years old, and they started dating four years later in 2002, before getting married in 2008.

It’s not all been smooth sailing, with Wayne’s cheating scandals, and a drink-driving arrest a year after welcoming their son Kit into the world in 2016.

However, the Manchester United and England legend – who also has sons Kai, 16, Klay, 13, and eight-year-old Cass with his wife – revealed they have stayed strong.

He said: “We’ve known each other since we were kids, and we’ve been through difficult moments. But we love and care for each other.”

Coleen admitted she and Wayne are “surprised” by how candid they have been on the new series, having “always been quite private” in a bid to keep their family “out of public eye”.

She said: “I’m proud of us as a couple, as we’re still sane after everything we’ve been through…

“There were mornings where we woke up and weren’t actually speaking to each other, but the film crew were there.

“If we weren’t talking, it was natural – maybe it was a bit frosty, but that’s what life is. Couples go through that.”
