Amid mounting outrage over actor-politician Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Generation gutter’ remark, her party colleague and former Education Minister Smriti Irani breaks her silence on the comment. In an exclusive interview with India Today television, Irani neither defended Ranaut nor criticised the words the BJP MP used while talking about the CJP protest in Jantar Mantar.
Speaking to India Today’s Marya Shakil, Irani avoided making a direct statement over the issue. The 50-year-old was heard saying, “I think my colleague has many times explained her position. I will not comment on a colleague within my political organisation who has already cleared out her position.”

Irani then focused on the efforts that the NDA government has made for the empowerment of women and hailed Prime Minister Modi for delivering on the promises to the women of this nation.
“I will look at my leadership and then talk about what my leadership has institutionalised about women in our country. It is my leadership; it is Narendra Modi who brought gender from the sidelines and made it a part of the mainstream in Indian politics,” said Irani.

In the conversation, the former Education Minister brought up several key achievements of the Narendra Modi-led government for women. She hailed the 33 per cent women’s reservation bill, which was passed unanimously in Parliament in the year 2023, as a step that has provided a huge boost to women in politics.
“It is my Prime Minister who has ensured that women no longer remain on the sidelines by passing the 33% reservation bill in Parliament. Do not take away anything that is owed to the Prime Minister because of what one of us has said. His leadership has spoken,” Irani argued.
She also appreciated the NDA government for key decisions like opening bank accounts for 250 million Indian women and building 110 million toilets exclusively for women.
KANGANA RANAUT FACES WRATH OVER HER COMMENTS
Smriti Irani’s comments came amid widespread criticism of Kangana Ranaut from various quarters for comparing the mentality and behaviour of some of the Jantar Mantar protesters to a gutter. Ranaut also drew criticism for allegedly making anti-women remarks while speaking about the movement.
After those remarks came to the fore, several members from the CJP leadership, including Abhijeet Dipke and Saurav Das, criticised her. Sonu Sood, an actor who worked with Kangana in two films, also criticised her for making such comments.
