West Indies spinners Jomel Warrican and Joshua Bishop caused a dramatic Bangladesh batting collapse on the second day of the opening Test in Dhaka before the hosts’ own tweakers hit back.

Resuming on Thursday at 3-231, Bangladesh were dismissed for 272 after losing seven wickets for 59 runs in the morning session.

Left-armer Warrican claimed 5-53 and Bishop took 2-61 on debut.

The West Indies then made a promising start before Bangladesh’s spinners Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan took four wickets in quick succession to reduce them to 4-134 in 48 overs before play ended early because of bad light and rain.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 43 with Justin Greaves for company at the day’s end.

Opener John Campbell struck 54 and gave the visitors a fluent start after Hasan Mahmud dismissed opener Brandon King for 15.

While Campbell attacked the bowlers, Chanderpaul showed strong determination to deny the spinners who got plenty of turn and bounce.

Campbell raised his sixth test half-century off 61 balls by smashing Mehidy Hasan for a six over long on.

With West Indies at 1-89 and in control, bad light and rain delayed the game for an hour and after the resumption, Mehidy struck immediately with the wicket of Campbell, who poked towards second slip.

Taijul removed Kavem Hodge (7) and Aamir Jangoo (0) in the same over, leaving West Indies at 4-97 before Chanderpaul and Greaves handled the last 12 overs.

Earlier, Shadman Islam, on 99 overnight, had reached his third century off 221 balls off the second ball of the morning.

But he was soon dismissed by Bishop, who reviewed to get his first Test wicket., and he struck again with the wicket of Towhid Hridoy from a straighter delivery.

Warrican turned one sharply to rattle the stump of Mehidy on 15.

Pacer Shamar Joseph, who ended with 2-41, also dealt a double blow with the wickets of Nayeem Hasan and Hasan Murad.

Warrican came back to complete his fourth five-wicket haul by dismissing Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam as Bangladesh lost their last five wickets for 19, leaving Liton Das stranded on 34.
