A woman used her work in the real estate industry to gain access to a Box Hill apartment building where she and a child fell to their deaths.

Police are investigating after the body of a 38-year-old woman and five-year-old girl, from Blackburn South, were found outside the Prospect Street building about 6.20pm on Thursday night.

Emergency services attended, but the pair could not be revived.

The 29-storey complex was cordoned off late Thursday but had been reopened by Friday morning. Police remain at the woman’s home, but said in a statement they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

A man who works nearby, but asked not to be identified because of the nature of the incident, said the woman had collected the key to a vacant apartment upstairs, saying she was showing it to a client.

The young girl was with her at the time and the pair were seen entering the building.

Residents leaving for work and school at the apartments on Friday said they knew very little about what had happened.

Michael said the residents inside were a tight-knit community.

“The whole building is in mourning, crying,” he said.

One young woman, who didn’t want to be named, said people in a residents group chat had been praying for the woman and child before learning they had died.

“I think everyone will feel sad,” she said. “We don’t know what will happen.”

Another resident said she arrived home late on Thursday to find police and paramedics at the front of her building. She said she only found out on the news on Friday why they were there.
