West Bengal Police arrested a woman who allegedly posed as a senior Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) official to gain access to the state secretariat Nabanna.

The woman, identified as Dr Akangsha Vidyarthi, allegedly sought an appointment with West Bengal PWD Minister Ajay Poddar earlier this week. During the meeting, however, the minister became suspicious of her “irrelevant statements”, according to police.

The minister’s office subsequently sought to verify Vidyarthi’s credentials and found that her claim of being associated with the PMO was false. A police complaint was then filed, leading to a case at Shibpur police station in Howrah under Sections 319(2), 204 and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

By then, Vidyarthi had left Kolkata and travelled to Delhi by flight.

A team of Howrah Police later reached Delhi and arrested her from her residence in central Delhi on Thursday. She was subsequently brought to Howrah on transit remand.

According to police, Vidyarthi had secured a meeting with the PWD minister after sending an email to the department. In the email, she allegedly claimed to be associated with Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh, who is also a Minister of State in the PMO.

During the meeting with Poddar, Vidyarthi allegedly took a photograph with the minister.

Police are now investigating how she managed to secure access to the state secretariat and whether she had made similar claims or approached other officials in the past.
