The dismembered body of a woman, who was estranged from her husband and family and had been living alone, was recovered from a canal in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR district, police said.
Police suspect that a mutton shop owner, Shafi, with whom the woman, Kalyani, was allegedly in a relationship, was behind the murder and dismemberment of her body following a quarrel.

Kalyani’s body was recovered from the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS) canal on September 18, following which police confirmed her identity. She was originally from Guntur district.
According to police, Kalyani had been living alone after becoming estranged from her husband and family. During their investigation into missing women’s cases in Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring regions, police identified her as the woman whose dismembered body had been found in the canal.
Kalyani was allegedly in a relationship with Shafi, who runs a mutton shop in Bhavanipuram, Vijayawada, and was reportedly staying near his house. Police said the two had a quarrel on September 17 after Kalyani allegedly demanded money from Shafi.
She had reportedly asked him for money on several occasions, including amounts of Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, and had also allegedly asked him to buy small gold items for her.
The motive for the killing was not immediately clear. However, police suspect that Kalyani was murdered following the dispute and that her body was subsequently cut into pieces and dumped in the canal in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Police said Shafi, allegedly used the knife he normally used to cut meat to kill Kalyani.
As part of the investigation, police examined the call data records of Kalyani’s mobile phone and took three people into custody for questioning in connection with the case.
Police also initially investigated rumours about the involvement of several people as they tried to establish the circumstances surrounding Kalyani’s death.
