Potato lovers in Idaho had plenty to celebrate after a huge batch of French fries officially broke a Guinness World Record.

The Idaho Potato Commission and Spud Daddy reclaimed the title at Boise Potato Days on Friday, producing a staggering 1,474lb of fresh-cut fries from 1,700lb of Idaho potatoes.

The enormous serving beat the previous record of 1,452.85lb, set in India in 2018.

Idaho previously held the title in 2014, when Twin Oaks Farms in Eagle served 1,003lb of fries, and the record then travelled to Greece in 2017 before landing in India the following year.

This time, organisers were determined to bring it back to the US potato-growing state.

“If you’re going to hold the world record for the largest serving of French fries, we think it belongs in Idaho,” said Jamey Higham, president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission.

“We’ve always known Idaho potatoes make the best fries, so it was time to bring this title home and celebrate the growers and industry that put Idaho potatoes on the map.”

Getting the fries ready for their record-breaking appearance was no small job, requiring six fryers and 50 people.

“We do potatoes big in Idaho, but this was on another level,” said Thomas Watson, founder of Spud Daddy and Potato Days.

“It took 6 fryers, 50 people and a whole lot of potatoes to pull this off. You can’t get much more Idaho than that.”

Once Guinness officials completed the weigh-in, the gigantic serving was handed out free to Potato Days attendees, allowing visitors to literally get a taste of the record.

The achievement comes after a 12-year journey for the title, which has moved between Idaho, Greece and India since 2014.

Guinness World Records receives around 50,000 applications every year, according to CBS News’ 60 Minutes, with as many as 95 per cent rejected.
