Yamaha is set to make its upcoming R2 fully faired motorcycle debut in India today, August 27. The motorcycle has already been teased ahead of its launch, giving the first official glimpse of Yamaha’s new entry-level offering in the R-series.
Positioned above the R15, the Yamaha R2 is expected to appeal to buyers looking for a performance upgrade without stepping into the more expensive 300cc-plus supersport motorcycle segment.

Yamaha R2 price and booking details
The Yamaha R2 is expected to be priced at around Rs 2 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. This would position it as a natural upgrade for existing R15 owners while putting it in direct competition with motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR.
Yamaha has already opened pre-bookings for the R2 for Rs 10,000. The booking amount is fully refundable, although refunds will be processed only after September 5. Customers who pre-book the motorcycle before its launch will also get priority.
The final price, variants and availability will be announced at the launch.
Yamaha R2 design and styling
The R2 is expected to retain the sharp and aggressive styling that defines Yamaha’s R-series motorcycles. It will feature a fully faired design, clip-on handlebars and a committed riding position, giving it the appearance and riding stance expected from a supersport motorcycle.
The motorcycle is also expected to carry several design cues from Yamaha’s larger R-series models, although the final specifications and equipment will be revealed at the launch.
Yamaha R2 features
Yamaha is expected to equip the R2 with a relatively comprehensive feature list for its segment. Potential highlights could include a full-TFT instrument cluster, shift indicators, traction control, ABS and an updated version of Yamaha’s Y-Connect connected technology.
However, these features have not been officially confirmed yet, and the final equipment list is expected to be revealed during the India debut.
Yamaha R2 engine and performance
Yamaha has not yet revealed the R2’s engine specifications. The motorcycle is expected to use a 200cc-class engine, with performance likely to be one of its key selling points.
The R2 will enter a segment where the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR produce around 25bhp. Yamaha could therefore focus on keeping the motorcycle light while delivering strong power-to-weight performance.
For reference, the Yamaha R15 V4 weighs 141kg, while the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR weigh 160kg and 163.5kg, respectively. If Yamaha manages to keep the R2 close to the R15’s lightweight philosophy, it could have an advantage in terms of agility and handling.
The motorcycle’s exact power, torque, gearbox and performance figures will be announced at the launch.
Yamaha R2 expected rivals
The Yamaha R2 is expected to compete primarily with the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR. Its positioning could make it an interesting option for buyers who want more performance than the R15 but do not want to spend significantly more on a 300cc-class motorcycle.
Yamaha’s focus on weight, riding dynamics and the R-series’ supersport character could be central to the R2’s appeal.
If priced around Rs 2 lakh and kept substantially lighter than its rivals, the R2 could become an important upgrade option for R15 owners and strengthen Yamaha’s presence in the 200cc-class performance motorcycle segment.
