Mourners gathered at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney’s CBD to farewell Constable Mia Lay, who was killed on duty in the early hours of September 25.
Lay died when the NSW Police patrol car she was travelling in collided with a tree in Redfern, in the city’s inner-south.
The 20-year-old had been a serving police officer for less than 18 months when she died, having graduated from the police force’s Goulburn academy last May.
Lay has been remembered as a passionate and promising young officer who was adored by colleagues in the South Sydney area command and the tight-knit Redfern police station, where she had been stationed since graduating.
Lay’s casket was led from the cathedral by a police procession.
Mia’s loved ones on Wednesday remembered her as kind and full of life.
“You were taken from us far too soon,” her father, Clem Lay said.
Lay’s mother, Tamara, said her heart was broken at the death of her daughter.
“A child should never die before her mother,” she said.
