Israel President Isaac Herzog has written to Captain Smit Machchhar, thanking him for his courage in steering a Flydubai aircraft to safety on September 30, 2026, and inviting him to Jerusalem once he recovers from his injuries. Herzog has also pledged to present the Indian pilot with Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.

In his letter, Herzog expressed the State of Israel’s deep gratitude to Machchhar for his determination in averting a catastrophe for passengers aboard the flight.

HERZOG PRAISES PILOT’S COURAGE

In the letter, Herzog praised Machchhar for maintaining his composure in the face of grave danger and making sound decisions despite being in pain.

“Your ability to find the strength to rise above the pain, to combat the immediate threat to your life, and to operate sound judgment demonstrates the strength of your character and the great valor you possess,” Herzog wrote.

Earlier this week, during a ceremony honouring six Israeli citizens who were aboard the flight, Herzog announced his intention to confer the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism on Machchhar after he recovers from his injuries.

The award was presented to the six Israeli citizens in recognition of their heroism during the incident.

Herzog also drew a connection between Machchhar’s actions and the historic ties between India and Israel, recalling the Indian troops who fought in the Holy Land more than a century ago.

“Your heroics place you in the distinguished ranks of Indian troops, who risked their lives over 100 years ago to liberate cities in the Holy Land, forever becoming a part of Israel’s history,” the President wrote.

He added that Machchhar would also become a treasured part of Israel’s history, further strengthening the warmth and connection between the two countries.

“You too, Captain Machchhar, will henceforth be a treasured part of our people’s history, further amplifying the warmth and connection between the Republic of India and the State of Israel,” Herzog said.

Concluding his letter, Herzog acknowledged that Machchhar was recovering in the United Arab Emirates, describing the UAE as a close friend and partner.

“As you slowly begin your journey towards healing, I know that you are in the very best hands of our dear friends and partners in the United Arab Emirates,” he wrote.

Expressing his wishes for the captain’s recovery, Herzog said he looked forward to welcoming him to Jerusalem once he regained his strength.

“We all share heartfelt prayers for your full and speedy recovery, and I look forward, once you have regained strength, to welcoming you to Jerusalem and expressing the appreciation and the love of our grateful nation,” he said.
