US Vice-President JD Vance said Washington is seeking an Iranian commitment not to target commercial vessels as part of efforts to restore safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking to Fox News, Vance said the strait must be cleared of mines and a safe passage system established before commercial traffic can return to normal.
He said Iran and Gulf countries, particularly Oman, have been discussing ways to ensure the safe flow of maritime traffic.
Vance said the US is working on a system that would allow ships to pass safely, including through demining efforts. He added that Washington also wants assurances from Tehran that it will not fire on commercial vessels.
