Tamil Nadu is set to give its iconic East Coast a major infrastructure and tourism push with plans for a ferry service connecting Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Puducherry, along with an elevated coastal road aimed at improving connectivity between the three destinations.

The proposed ferry service will allow the public to travel between Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Puducherry by sea. The initiative will be implemented in coordination with the Government of India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Puducherry government.

Alongside the ferry service, the state has proposed an elevated coastal road connecting Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Puducherry, taking a cue from the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai sea-link project. The proposed road is expected to reduce travel time between the three major coastal destinations and provide a faster alternative for tourists and commuters.

The Tamil Nadu government said the project would be planned with due protection of the marine and coastal environment. The proposal is expected to strengthen tourism infrastructure along one of the state’s most prominent coastal corridors while improving road connectivity between Chennai and Puducherry.

A feasibility study for a coastal connectivity road from Chennai to Poonjeri in Mahabalipuram had already been announced in the 2025-26 financial year. However, the government said the project has not progressed as expected and will now be given high priority.

The announcements made on Tuesday are preliminary in nature. The government has not yet announced a detailed implementation timeline, construction schedule or other project-specific details for either the ferry service or the elevated coastal road.
