The US government has issued a travel alert for Americans planning to visit Mexicali in northern Mexico and has temporarily suspended consular activities in the city over what it called a “potential threat”. The notice, released on Monday night, did not give details about the threat or say who it was directed at.

The alert advised US citizens to avoid government buildings, seek shelter if an incident occurs, and remain aware of their surroundings. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that there had been an alert about the possibility of a criminal group, adding that the report was based on information from US agencies.

The US said consular activities and travel to Mexicali, the capital of Baja California state, had been suspended because of information about “a threat”. It did not provide further details. At her regular morning news conference, Sheinbaum said, “There is no further information about what this alert could involve, but simply to remain alert and maintain surveillance in Mexicali.”

The city remained calm through Tuesday. Later that afternoon, Sheinbaum’s security cabinet said in a statement that authorities “have not identified any elements confirming a specific or imminent risk to the population”. It added that surveillance and patrols in Mexicali had been stepped up as a “preventative measure”.

Around midnight, Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar vila said in a message on her X account that Mexican authorities remained active and that security operations would be reinforced in the state capital. Mexicali, which has more than 1 million residents, is one of the most populous cities along the Mexican border and has close commercial and social ties with the US city of Calexico across the border.

In sum, the US has issued a travel alert and suspended consular activities in Mexicali over an unspecified threat, while Mexican authorities have said there is no confirmed specific or imminent risk but have increased security measures in the city.
