Witnesses said the atmosphere turned tense within minutes as large numbers of devotees gathered at the spot demanding immediate action against those responsible. Members of the Ganesh mandal claimed such an incident had never occurred during the decades-old celebration and called for strict punishment for the accused. Eggshells were reportedly found near the vehicle carrying the idol.
Police personnel rushed to the scene and worked to calm the crowd, assuring them that the culprit would be identified and action taken swiftly. Authorities said the situation was brought under control without any major disturbance.
Following an investigation involving technical surveillance and local intelligence inputs, police arrested Danish Sher Khan, 22, within 36 hours of the incident.
According to investigators, Khan works as an online delivery agent who was carrying eggs at the time. During questioning, he allegedly told police that he was passing through the area when the Ganesh procession was underway and firecrackers were being burst as part of the celebrations.
Police said Khan claimed he became irritated by the smoke generated by the crackers, which allegedly prompted him to throw the eggs toward the procession.
A case has been registered against him under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to deliberate acts intended to outrage religious sentiments and promoting enmity or ill-will between groups.
The accused has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway. Police officials said they are examining all aspects of the incident while appealing to citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony during the festive season.
