A mum has been captured on CCTV startling three alleged would-be-thieves from stealing a valuable motorbike from her garage.
Police allege three men forced their way into a Perth family’s garage by manipulating the emergency release mechanism to open a garage door, but were quickly confronted by the mum who went to investigate strange noises.
She can be heard yelling: “Get out. Get out of my house. Help!”
Police said the woman was at home with her children at the time.
“She saw three (alleged) offenders in her garage and called out to them. The offenders have run off on foot, without any property,” Acting Inspector Darryl Fuller said.
“Although on this occasion a police response enabled two offenders to be apprehended and charged, this incident has a huge impact on the victim.
“She was left disturbed and shaken, no one should feel unsafe in their own home.”
Two men have been charged – prompting a warning about the lengths some will attempt to go to to steal valuable property.
Inspector Fuller urged residents to stay vigilant selling items online after an increase in thefts linked to online marketplace listings involving motorcycles and valuable property.
He said once offenders knew where high value items were held they could strike at any time.
“These offenders are incredibly brazen and willing to do whatever it takes to obtain that property,” the acting inspector said.
“It’s really clear that if you don’t post photos of where the items are located, and you don’t allow members of the public to see where these items are being stored you’re far less likely to be targeted.
“The offenders are going to great lengths to identify where this property is being located and target that location.”
Inspector Fuller urged people to secure their valuables and garages to make it really hard for offenders to strike and steal their property.
“The offenders are willing to travel across the metropolitan area, and the message is simple: they are targeting people because they know where these valuables are,” he said.
“Motorcycles are a high-value commodity because they are transportable, they can be sold, and they can be sold as spare parts.
“While we haven’t uncovered linked offences with these motorcycles, it obviously enables the offenders to travel from suburb to suburb and potentially facilitate other crime.”
