A WA-born TV star has opened up about the traumatic birth of her first child earlier this year.
Dianne Buswell is a Bunbury-born dancer who rose to fame as a professional on hit UK TV show Strictly Come Dancing, a competition show that sees the nation’s biggest celebrities hitting the dance floor with skilled choreographers.
The 37-year-old welcomed her first child Bowden with partner and famous YouTuber Joe Sugg back in March, just two months after the couple jetted off to explore Buswell’s native South West.
While the dancer has been keeping her 1.2m online followers up to date with her motherhood journey, the TV star recently sat down with The Sun for her first interview since giving birth.
“Life is busy, but it’s the happiest I’ve ever been. But also the most tired. It’s a bag of emotions,” she told the UK tabloid.
She revealed medical complications resulted in her needing to undergo an emergency caesarean section to deliver the baby — a procedure that Buswell said she feared would destroy her dance career.
“I was hoping to have a natural birth, but it didn’t work out that way,” she said.
“I was frightened of not being able to feel my legs. It was scary and I didn’t think about the recovery at the time.”
After undergoing the operation and successfully bringing little Bowden into the world, the Strictly professional said she was left struggling to recover.
“There were moments where I was lying in bed, needing to go to the toilet in the middle of the night, and I had to wake Joe and say, ‘Please come and get me,’ because I physically couldn’t use my stomach to get out of bed,” she said of her postpartum experience.
“I remember crying in his arms because I was in so much pain.
“It was a real shock to the system.”
Despite the difficult recovery, Buswell said the experience has not put her off another pregnancy, with the star saying she will welcome another baby when the time is right.
The performer also spoke about her performance on the 2025 season of Strictly Come Dancing — where the pregnant Sandgroper competed alongside fellow Aussie, Neighbours star Stefan Dennis.
The pair’s competition run ended early after Dennis was forced to pull out in Week 4 due to an injury, but Buswell revealed her decision to compete in the season while pregnant caused some heavy backlash from fans of the show.
“I followed medical advice and laughed it off when people said nasty things like, ‘I can’t watch Strictly any more because this girl is doing cartwheels pregnant’,” she said.
“It was all a bit mad.”
Dianne is expected to make her big comeback to the competition show later in 2026 — however, it’s not known yet what celebrity she will be partnered with.
