Emma Heming Willis says she is trying to remain strong for her daughters amid her husband Bruce Willis’ dementia battle, but they have seen her “broken on the floor”.
The Die Hard actor was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023, which has left him with limited ability to communicate.
Heming Willis has become his full-time carer.
In an interview with Hello!, Heming Willis said that despite the challenges her husband’s diagnosis brings, she is happy to see her daughters Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12, witness support from friends and family.
“I think there’s something genuinely beautiful about them growing up with that sense of unity,” she said.
“Yes, it’s heartbreakingly hard but my daughters are learning the true meaning of loyalty, devotion and unconditional love.
“My daughters have seen me be strong, of course, but they’ve also seen me broken on the floor.
“At the end of the day, I’m only human. I think they’re very aware that I’m doing the best I can.
“I’ve never been through this before; I’m learning everything in real time.”
Heming Willis, who married Willis on March 21, 2009, in the Turks and Caicos Islands, also admitted she is still grappling with feelings of guilt daily.
“The reality is that guilt is something I still struggle with daily,” she said.
“When you are a care partner and you have to navigate a situation like this, it’s practically impossible not to feel guilty.
“But I’ve learned that I can’t allow that feeling to consume me because it’s a huge waste of time and energy.”
The former model said that she was working to find the right amount of honesty to share with her children without compromising the joy of their adolescence.
“It’s a really delicate balance to strike. Guiding them through something like this — through any serious illness, really — is an enormous challenge,” she said.
“But despite how tough things get, I always try to remind myself that it could be so much worse.”
Last year, Heming Willis published a book about her journey looking after Willis called The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path.
Willis was moved into a separate home from his family so his wife could help manage his progressing condition.
“It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make so far,” Heming Willis told ABC News in August 2025.
“But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters.
“You know, he would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”
In January, she revealed that she has dinner with the Pulp Fiction actor several times a week and often enjoys breakfast with him.
