Apple has officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing what the company describes as massive advancements in the most critical areas, i.e., intelligence, performance, battery life, and photography. The new pro iPhones introduce a more powerful 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip, a deeply integrated Siri AI, and a variable aperture camera, to make their case at a time when memory shortage is pushing smartphone prices at an all-time high. To that effect, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900 ($1,199) while the iPhone 18 Pro Max will set you back by Rs 1,79,900 ($1,299) for 256GB storage. Pre-orders start from September 12 and general availability is pegged for September 18.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max design and colours

The iPhone 18 Pro features a gorgeous, cohesive design that Apple says blends colour-matched aluminum and back glass. The new devices are being offered in four striking finishes: an incredibly deep Black, a highly refined Silver, a fresh new shade called Glacier, and a sophisticated, unique new Burgundy.

On the front, the Dynamic Island has received a major upgrade. It has been redesigned to be smaller and more useful, now capable of displaying up to three Live Activities simultaneously.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max performance and battery life

Powering the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built on 2-nanometre technology. It has a 6-core CPU with two desktop-class supercores (up to 20% faster) and four efficiency cores paired to a 7-core GPU delivering a massive 40% increase in graphics performance compared to the previous generation. The Neural Engine is 32-core providing 2x the compute power for running third-party LLMs entirely on-device, according to Apple.

Apple has also redesigned the internal thermal architecture to match the new chip. A next-generation vapour chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro utilises cycling deionized water, 80% recycled stainless steel, and an industry-first nanotwin copper material. This allows for up to a 40% gain in sustained performance over the iPhone 17 Pro.

Thanks to the efficiencies of the A20 Pro and new battery designs, battery life is also getting a big boost. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback (on eSIM models) and up to 24 hours of real-world mixed usage per charge. The iPhone 18 Pro Max goes a step further delivering a staggering 45 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of real-world usage.

Wired charging is also significantly faster, reaching a 50% charge in just 15 minutes.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max camera

Apple has introduced its biggest camera upgrade in years on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with a new 48-megapixel Fusion main camera featuring a mechanical variable aperture. Using six laser-cut polymer composite blades thinner than a human hair, the camera can physically adjust its aperture. In low light, it opens up to let in 50% more light (optimised at f/1.8), and it can narrow to increase the depth of field for crisp group shots.

The software matches the hardware with new Pro Controls, allowing photographers to manually adjust white balance, check histograms, tweak shutter speed for intentional motion blur, and select between four manual aperture settings.

For authenticity in the AI era, Apple introduced Apple Reference Image. Moving beyond the supported Synth ID standard, the iPhone 18 Pro securely signs photo data at the pixel level via the sensor at the time of capture. This acts as an unalterable “digital negative” that proves what was actually in front of the lens.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max pricing and availability

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900 while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,79,900. Both come in a choice of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities. Sales start September 18 with pre-orders beginning September 12.
