This is not the first time Tharoor has joined a viral AI trend. In September 2025, he shared an AI-generated image that showed him face-to-face with his 22-year-old self as he participated in the viral social media trend, ‘Hug My Younger Self’.
He had also joined the Ghibli trend in March 2025, sharing an AI-generated version of himself in the popular Studio Ghibli-inspired style.
WHAT IS THE VIRAL 80S AI TREND?
The trend involves using AI to recreate photographs in the style of the 1980s, giving people a glimpse of how they could have looked during the decade.
The AI-generated pictures have sparked a wave of nostalgia on social media, with users sharing their retro avatars and images. Several political figures have also joined the trend, posting their own 1980s-inspired pictures.
PIYUSH GOYAL JOINS THE TREND
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was among the political figures to embrace the trend.
Sharing an AI-generated image, Goyal captioned it, “Vibing to the 80s trend.”
In the picture, Goyal appears in a tailored grey suit, white shirt and aviator sunglasses. The image has been given a distinctly vintage treatment, with sepia tones, film grain and a faded texture that makes it resemble an old studio portrait.
KIREN RIJIJU GOES RETRO
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also joined the trend, sharing his own retro-inspired image on X.
Rijiju’s picture shows him in sunglasses, a blazer and an open shirt, posing beside a car. He accompanied the image with a tongue-in-cheek caption about the sudden return of 1980s nostalgia.
“Why is everyone going back to the 80s vibes? I’m also forced to 80s nostalgia,” he wrote.
HIMANTA BISWA SARMA IN NOSTALGIC MOOD
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the viral trend as well, sharing an AI-generated throwback image.
Sarma wrote, “Getting to any trend which has nostalgia attached to it. Back to the 80s eh!.”
The trend has brought a distinctly retro feel to social media, with politicians among those joining users in experimenting with AI-generated versions of themselves from the 1980s.
Tharoor’s reel adds another layer to the trend with AI-generated versions of himself from the 1980s, giving followers a glimpse of how he might have looked in his younger days.
