Devon Sawa thinks Final Destination has saved him from ever “dying” in a plane crash.
The -year-old actor, who rose to fame as the human boy version of Casper in the 1995 classic before starring in the 2000 disaster horror film, which began with his character Alex Browning having a premonition about an accident which ends up saving him and his classmates, before Death hunts them down to claim what’s his.
Speaking on The Daily Beast’s Obsessed: The Podcast, Devon pondered: “Here’s my thought.
“The chances of me doing a movie about dying in an airplane and then actually dying in an airplane would be pretty slim.
“So I think that I’m safe. I don’t think it could happen. It would be too perfect.”
The reporter joked that if Devon did die in a plane explosion or an avalanche from a log truck – which is a nod to the opening of the second Final Destination film, then “TMZ would have a field day”.
The actor quipped: “I’m not giving them that joy.”
However, Devon admitted he is just like the fans, and whenever he’s behind a log truck, he can’t help but think of the scene showing Kimberly Corman’s (NAME NAME) premonition of a snapped chain causing a fatal pileup.
He said: “That’s the beauty of it. Everybody likes to talk about the log truck. It’s a horrifying thought to think of if those logs come free.”
Devon, who only appeared in the first Final Destination movie, also opened up on the moment the cast realised how special a project it was.
He recalled: “We didn’t know quite what it was until the first time we screened it with an audience.
“We sat in the back of a theatre with this full audience, and we realized they had created something that was very original and very new, because the whole audience, almost like a wave, just got up and roared.
“It wasn’t just a jump scare like you see in other movies. It was something special, visceral to watch. And we knew right then that these filmmakers had created something that was different and that would have longevity.”
Since then, Devon has appeared in the likes of Black Friday, Consumed, Heart Eyes and Return of the Living Dead, as well as several direct-to-video offerings.
On TV, he has appeared in episodes of Real Detective, Magnum P.I. and Chuckie, while he most recently landed a guest role as Mr. Peter Cole in Coven Academy.
