Passengers at Perth Airport face major delays after a bushfire emergency in the Perth Hills cut power to the airport.

An airport spokesman warned travellers to expect delays after a power outage impacted operations.

Inbound flights are still able to land at the airport, but baggage systems have been affected by the outage, causing delays at check-in.

“Safety and security remain our highest priority, and passengers should expect delays,” a spokesman said.

“We will provide further information as it becomes available.”

A Western Power spokesman said power lines leading to the airport had been affected by a bushfire and they were working with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to restore power.

Western Power’s outage website indicates electricity will be restored about 7.30pm.

Kalamunda residents in the Perth Hills were advised it was not safe to return to their home after the “suspicious” bushfire was downgraded to a Watch and Act about 4.30pm on Thursday.

Residents were told they may see flames during the eventing and to stay alert as conditions could change.

“There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is burning in the area and conditions are changing,” a warning stated.

“If you have left the area, it is unsafe to return due to fallen trees, fallen powerlines and other dangers created by the fire.”

Roads in the area have been closed as emergency services respond to the fire and conduct back burning to merge containment lines.
