Managing Aadhaar details for multiple family members can often mean carrying several documents or switching between different digital records. The new Aadhaar App aims to make this easier by allowing users to manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single smartphone.

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), an individual with a valid Aadhaar number can create up to five profiles on the Aadhaar App. The feature is designed to support the idea of “One Family One App.”

WHAT IS THE NEW AADHAAR APP?

The Aadhaar App is the official mobile application developed and managed by UIDAI. It is available on both Android and iOS devices and provides several Aadhaar-related services through a smartphone.

Users can register on the app by entering their Aadhaar number, selecting the relevant SIM card, completing face authentication and setting a six-digit PIN to secure access.

UP TO FIVE AADHAAR PROFILES ON ONE PHONE

One of the key features of the new app is the ability to manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device.

This can be particularly useful for families where members may need to access or show their Aadhaar credentials digitally. Instead of carrying multiple physical Aadhaar documents, eligible profiles can be managed through the same app.

UIDAI has specifically confirmed that up to five profiles can be created on the Aadhaar App.

HOW CAN A MINOR’S AADHAAR PROFILE BE ADDED?

The app also allows a minor’s Aadhaar profile to be added in certain circumstances.

According to UIDAI, the minor can be added if the relationship with the guardian was established through biometric authentication during Aadhaar enrolment. The minor enters their Aadhaar number, after which the guardian completes face authentication.

If the minor has already completed the Mandatory Biometric Update, the minor can instead complete face authentication for adding the profile.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO ON THE AADHAAR APP?

The app offers several Aadhaar-related services beyond profile management. These currently include updating the mobile number and address, locking and unlocking biometrics, checking authentication history, downloading e-Aadhaar, sharing a contact card, tracking requests and selectively sharing Aadhaar verifiable credentials.

The app can also allow Aadhaar holders to securely share their identity information with an Offline Verification Seeking Entity, based on their consent and choice.

HOW DOES THE APP KEEP ACCESS SECURE?

The Aadhaar App requires users to complete authentication during registration and set a six-digit PIN for accessing the app. It also offers a biometric lock and unlock facility, allowing users to control the use of their Aadhaar biometrics.

NOT ALL AADHAAR UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE ON THE APP

While the app offers several services, users cannot currently update every Aadhaar detail through it.

UIDAI says that name, gender, email and date of birth updates are not currently available through the app. Similarly, photographs, fingerprints and iris details cannot be updated through the app and require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an Aadhaar enrolment and update centre.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR FAMILIES?

The ability to manage up to five profiles on one smartphone could make digital Aadhaar access more convenient for families. Instead of maintaining separate phones for different Aadhaar profiles, eligible family members can use the same device to access their digital identity credentials.

The feature is part of UIDAI’s broader push towards making Aadhaar services more digital, convenient and secure while reducing the need to carry physical documents.
