WHAT IS THE MANDATORY BIOMETRIC UPDATE?
As children grow, their fingerprints, iris scans and facial features change. To keep Aadhaar records accurate, UIDAI requires biometric details to be updated at specific age milestones.
The Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) captures the latest biometric information, ensuring that Aadhaar continues to function as a reliable proof of identity.
WHY IS THE UPDATE IMPORTANT?
Updating biometric details can make identity verification easier for children and teenagers in several situations, including:
-
Admission to schools, colleges and educational institutions
-
Applying for competitive examinations
-
Availing government welfare schemes
-
Applying for scholarships
-
Internships and fellowship programmes
-
Other services that require Aadhaar-based identity verification
WHO SHOULD GET THE UPDATE?
The free Mandatory Biometric Update is available for children between 5 and 17 years of age. Parents are advised to complete the update before the deadline to avoid any inconvenience later.
HOW TO GET THE UPDATE DONE
Parents or guardians can visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Aadhaar enrolment centre with the child to complete the biometric update. The process includes capturing the child’s fingerprints, iris scan and photograph.
FREE TILL SEPTEMBER 30, 2026
UIDAI has announced that the Mandatory Biometric Update for children aged 5–17 years will remain free of cost until September 30, 2026. Completing the update within this period can help families avoid future hassles and ensure uninterrupted use of Aadhaar for educational and government-related services.
An updated Aadhaar helps ensure seamless identity verification as children grow. With the service currently being offered free of charge until September 30, 2026, parents should consider completing the Mandatory Biometric Update at the earliest to keep their child’s Aadhaar records current.
