After decades of displacement, Kashmiri Pandits on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a Ram Temple at a historic site in Kashmir Valley’s Shopian, marking the revival of a religious site associated with the community.
Hundreds of members of the Pandit community gathered at Tak Mohalla in Shopian, where they performed a traditional religious ceremony before laying the foundation stone for the temple. The ceremony marked an emotional moment of remembrance for the people who were present at the site.

The site carries a painful history for the community. The shrine was reportedly set ablaze in 1989, after which the land was allegedly encroached upon. Following years of efforts by the administration and concerned authorities, the land has now been reclaimed, paving the way for the reconstruction of the temple at its historic location.
The Department of Archaeology and Heritage has sanctioned funds for the project under its heritage conservation initiative. The move is expected to facilitate the revival of the religious site and restore an important part of the area’s heritage.
For Kashmiri Pandits, the temple is not merely a construction project. It represents an ancestral connection with Shopian and a reminder of the community’s place in the social and cultural fabric of Kashmir before its displacement.
The foundation-laying ceremony brought together members of the community who described the occasion as deeply emotional. What had remained for decades a painful memory of a lost religious site has now begun to take shape as a symbol of hope and revival.
The residents also welcomed the development, saying Kashmiri Pandits are an inseparable part of Kashmir’s history, culture and shared heritage. They said the return of religious sites associated with the community could help restore an important element of Kashmir’s composite cultural identity.
