A young woman in Assam’s Tezpur has sparked a wider conversation on moral policing after sharing a video of herself being publicly shamed over her choice of clothing by an elderly woman.

The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, unfolded when Anushka Sharma, a student, stepped out on her scooter to buy materials for a practical examination. What should have been a routine errand quickly turned into an uncomfortable confrontation when an elderly passerby allegedly began criticising her outfit.

According to Anushka, the woman accused her of dressing inappropriately and went on to make harsh remarks about her character. In the video, the elderly woman can be heard referring to her clothes as “lengta kapur” (naked clothes) and claiming that girls who dress this way “destroy society” and should not be living there.

Rather than silently enduring the comments, Anushka chose to confront the woman and began recording the exchange herself.

The video shows the student, dressed in a black tank top and trousers, questioning why her clothing was attracting such hostility. The elderly woman, who was also filming the interaction, continued to object to what she described as excessive skin exposure.

Anushka, however, pushed back against the criticism. At one point, she pointed out that the woman’s own petticoat was visible beneath her nightgown, highlighting what many viewers later described as the hypocrisy often present in such incidents.

The clip has reignited discussions around moral policing, a phenomenon that continues to surface across different parts of the country, particularly when it comes to women’s clothing and personal choices.

Several Instagram users commented that women are frequently subjected to unsolicited judgments and public scrutiny over what they wear, while their autonomy and right to self-expression are overlooked.

The incident has also struck a chord online because it reflects a broader issue many young women say they face, being assessed not by their actions, but by their appearance.

As the video continues to circulate, many social media users have rallied behind Anushka, condemning the public shaming and defending her right to dress as she chooses. For many, the episode is less about clothing and more about the persistence of moral policing in everyday life.
