Matildas star Ellie Carpenter’s Chelsea were given a stern test by Austria Vienna as they began their Women’s Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Plough Lane.
There was an expectation that Sonia Bompastor’s team would make light work of the Austrian side making their first-ever appearance in the competition proper, but this was a far tighter, far more competitive match-up than had been anticipated.
Wieke Kaptein scored after 11 minutes with a lovely effort that skimmed the underside of the bar on its way in, and at that stage it looked as though the floodgates would open.

The defending champions were handed an initial scare when Evelyne Viens put Paris in front only five minutes in, but Kerolin replied for the hosts.
Clara Serrajordi put Barca ahead in the 28th minute, kicking off a destructive 15 minute-period for the hosts, in which Pajor and Caroline Graham Hansen struck.
Pajor struck again in the 70th minute and Paris then pulled one back through Clara Mateo as Barca comfortably saw out the win.
OH Leuven and Roma played out a goalless draw in their clash.
