England superstar Harry Kane can see himself in the future kicking a football in the NFL while also scoring goals for a Major League Soccer team .
The Bayern Munich striker pondered these possibilities in a session with reporters on Wednesday as he revealed he was “fairly close” to finalising a new deal with the German champions.
As for a second career in sports, Kane’s love of golf is well known, but the two-handicap player admitted that becoming a professional might be a pipedream.
Londoner Kane, 33, is also a huge fan of the NFL’s New England Patriots and their former superstar quarterback Tom Brady. Becoming a kicker is something that Kane would like to explore, but not while he’s “still on the top of my game here” with soccer.
“That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously,” Kane told reporters at St. George’s Park, the English national teams’ training facility in Staffordshire.
“It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way!”
Soccer players have made the transition to American football, so Kane certainly has the foundation with his skill-set, but one of the game’s great goalscorers said it wouldn’t happen quickly.
“I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure and technique,” Kane said.
“If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than to any other sport. But as I know, with all elite sports, when you watch it on TV, people make it look easy, and you think it is possible, but that is not always the case.
“If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take six months to a year to try and practice before.”
Kane could combine his interest as an NFL kicker with a concurrent stint in the MLS, he discussed publicly for the first time on Wednesday.
“Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two, with the seasons,” he said.
“But it is in the back of my mind because right now, I am feeling that I want to play as long as I can here.”
