Queensland great Darius Boyd has been unveiled as the next Maroons coach after Billy Slater’s exit.
Boyd, who represented the Maroons 28 times in the State of Origin arena as a player, has signed a two-year deal. He is second on Queensland’s all-time tryscorers list behind Greg Inglis.
Boyd, 39, said he is “extremely honoured” at receiving the chance to lead his state in the Origin arena.
“It’s a privileged position, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” he said.

“I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well. My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us.”
Boyd’s signing comes after Slater departed from the Maroons coaching role last month following a five-year stint at the helm.
Since his retirement as a player at the end of 2020, Boyd has coached Queensland’s under-19 team to consecutive series wins over NSW.
Like Slater before him, Boyd joins Queensland with no prior NRL head coaching experience, although he has served as an assistant under Kevin Walters at the Broncos.

Queensland Rugby League (QRL) chair Brian Canavan said Boyd had “lived and breathed what it means to represent Queensland” as a player.
“His playing achievements speak for themselves, but what has impressed us just as much is the work he has done since retirement to develop as a coach and leader.
“He has built strong relationships throughout our pathways system, earned the respect of players and staff, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping young people reach their potential.
“Darius understands the responsibility that comes with the Maroons jersey. He knows our culture, our history and the standards required to succeed at the highest level.”
