Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray cited the Republicans’ crushing defeat in the US midterm elections to argue that citizens could not be bullied and that young Indians would reclaim democracy.
In a post on X on Thursday, Thackeray said India had awakened to what he described as the government’s brutality, insensitivity, corruption and poor governance.
“The world is showing that the citizens can never be bullied, they have to be heard! India has awakened to see the brutality of the regime, the insensitivity, the corruption, the mess in governance. Young Indians will reclaim democracy from the regime,” Thackeray said.

He said governments and regimes were changing across the world, in an apparent reference to developments in Israel, Brazil and parts of Europe.
“We see voters get a fair opportunity to strike a balance in governance. We see historic mandates changing hands. And we see some of the most technologically advanced countries trusting the paper ballot, still,” he said. “We see protests, we see votes and voices that are not crushed, but respected by those holding the baton — however large or small they may be, regardless of where they are held — not just designated sites!”
Referring to the ruling BJP, Thackeray alleged that a party had snatched the country’s democracy through “vote theft and election theft” and had tried to interfere in a milk cooperative election where farmers voted against it, PTI reported.
He also said political parties were fighting for justice against what he called a “fraud Election Commission that assisted party theft”. His remarks appeared to refer to the split in the Shiv Sena, founded by Bal Thackeray, and the subsequent legal battle between its two factions.
“We see the police being used to brutally crack down on peaceful protests that ask for accountability from the Election Commission, and for foolproof exams and we have jokers seated in office, questioning the religion, the castes of people asking for better air quality,” Thackeray said.
Thackeray’s remarks focused on changes in governments worldwide and alleged that democratic institutions, elections and peaceful protests were being undermined in India.
