Fresh speculation has emerged around the release of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s long-delayed film Jana Nayagan after a Canadian distributor hinted that the film could finally hit theatres on July 24. The development comes amid reports that the film has completed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) process after a seven-month delay and is awaiting its censor certificate.

Canada distributor hints at July 24 release

Canada-based distributor York Cinemas on Wednesday shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Finally! Our Own Thalapathy Vijay is ready to set the big screen on fire with #JanaNayagan. Canada Release by York Cinemas. Igniting screens from July 24. Get ready for the ultimate theatrical celebration. Stay tuned for tickets (sic).”

While the makers have not announced a release date, the post has fuelled speculation that Jana Nayagan is finally set to arrive in cinemas after months of uncertainty.

CBFC process nearing its end

Adding to the reports, the Jana Nayagan team has submitted all the modifications suggested by the CBFC and that the certification process has now been completed. The censor certificate is expected to be issued by Friday, following which the makers are likely to officially announce the release date.

The report further claimed that overseas distributors have already been informed to prepare for a July 24 theatrical release.

Although July 24 has emerged as the frontrunner, there is also a possibility that the film could release a day earlier, on July 23, depending on the makers’ final release strategy. However, neither date has been officially confirmed by KVN Productions.

Jana Nayagan and its seven-month delay

Jana Nayagan, which was marketed as Vijay’s final film before he shifted his focus to politics, was originally scheduled to release on January 9. However, the film became entangled in an unprecedented certification delay after being submitted to the CBFC in December 2025.

Court proceedings later revealed that the examining committee had initially sought modifications. After the makers resubmitted the film, the certification process was stalled when a member of the examining committee reportedly filed a complaint suggesting that certain scenes could hurt public sentiments. Also, reports were doing the rounds that the film’s release could benefit Vijay if it releases before the Tamil Nadu elections, which was scheduled in April.

With no decision forthcoming, KVN Productions approached the Madras High Court, but the issue remained unresolved even after a month-long standoff. This led to the production house withdrawing the petition and agreeing to send the film to the revising committee again.

Leak controversy added to delay

The uncertainty surrounding the film deepened in April after a high-definition copy of Jana Nayagan was leaked online before it could be certified. Police later arrested multiple people in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor.

During a recent hearing, the prosecution informed the Madras High Court that the pirated version of the film had allegedly been watched by 1.2 crore people before it was blocked from piracy websites.

The prolonged delay also led to several rounds of speculation, including a fake CBFC certificate that falsely claimed the film had been awarded an A certificate and listed fabricated cuts. It was later revealed that the forged document had been modelled on the censor certificate of Vijay’s 2023 film Leo.

Producer Venkat K. Narayana had earlier expressed confidence that the film would receive its censor certificate soon. If the latest reports are accurate, Jana Nayagan could finally reach theatres later this month after a wait of more than six months beyond its original release date.

However, until KVN Productions officially announces the release date and the CBFC issues the certificate, the reported July 23 or July 24 release remains unconfirmed.
