Dockers fans have belted out their club’s song many times this season, but they’ll have a few additional words to learn on Friday night when Perth-based music producer Crooked Colours drops his new Freo “hype track” at Optus Stadium.
Philip Slabber is behind the moniker, formerly a trio, and declared his love for the ladder-leading club on Monday by sharing a tune he had been fine-tuning with fans on social media.
“Any Freo Dockers fans out there? Should I release this? ⚓️💜” he captioned an Instagram post.
To his surprise, it wasn’t just Freo supporters hailing the track, with the club getting on board within minutes.
“A lot of you know that I’m a big Freo Dockers supporter, and the boys are having an absolutely ripper season. So I’ve been trying to think about what I can do to get behind the club, show some support,” Crooked Colours said.
“I’m in that weird period of time between finishing my album and waiting for it to come out, so I’ve got a little bit of time on my hands. So I’ve been working on this hype track . . . and it’s coming out pretty sick.”
The producer then played the tune, which featured vocals by teenage rapper Zafty who chanted “Freo marching to the top”, encouraging the purple army to believe “It’s coming home”.
After hearing it for the first time, even the Nigerian-born rapper proclaimed: “No larp I’m now the biggest Freo fan of all time. IT’S COMING HOME.”
Scores of fans of began sending back fire emojis in response to the release, with some labelling it as “straight vibes” or “amazing”, and even player Corey Wagner showing his support.
The Dockers quickly got involved, approving of the track and asking if the producer wished to play it on Friday at the home against the Crows.
“This is sick, do you want to play this at our game on Friday night? 👀” the club asked.
A jubilant Crooked Colours then shared a video reaction to the acknowledgement and follow request from the Dockers, exclaiming: “What! Let’s go!”
Crooked Colours is not the first artist to offer his musical talents to the harbour-side club, with global star Tame Impala, also known as Kevin Parker, mixing a hype track for the club in 2021 when he became the Dockers’ number one ticket holder.
It was subsequently played at home games, with Parker continuing to attend matches in Perth when his schedule permits.
The popularity of Crooked Colours’ attempt will ultimately depend on the embrace of fans.
His latest album Dirt Road Gold is set for release August 21, with national shows to follow in spring — beginning with a performance at Freo.Social on October 16.
