Pat Cummins was included for his first ODI in nearly two years as South Africa won the toss and bowled in the dead rubber third game in Potchefstroom.
Cummins was named on Wednesday to return from his back problems for only his third game in the format since Australia’s 2023 World Cup triumph in India.
In an unusual arrangement, while the quick remains Australia’s official skipper ahead of next year’s World Cup, Mitch Marsh has kept the captaincy for the game.
Australia made three changes, with Ollie Peake recalled to bat at No.4 for Jack Edwards, who suffered a hamstring complaint in game two, and paceman Mitchell Starc returning while Josh Hazlewood (managed) and Nathan Ellis (side strain) made way.
A wet outfield delayed the start of the day-night game by half an hour.
South Africa, who won the first two games of the three-match series, made five changes including resting captain Temba Bavuma and David Miller for Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton.
The Jansen brothers — Marco and Duan — were also replaced by Corbin Bosch and Gerald Coetzee. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who troubled the Australia batters in the first two games, made way for Nqobani Mokoena.
Australia made three changes after losing by 32 runs on Sunday at Johannesburg. Pat Cummins will play only his third ODI since winning the 2023 World Cup in India. Also back were Mitchell Starc and Ollie Peake. Mitchell Marsh will continue as skipper.
