David Harbour wants to go beyond the Stranger Things dynamic with Millie Bobby Brown.
The 51-year-old actor is reuniting with his 22-year-old former castmate on a new project for Netflix, and while they will once again play a father-daughter duo, he wants to set the series apart from their roles on the sci-fi juggernaut.
He told Variety: “She’s now in her 20s.
“And I think with Stranger Things, we explored a lot of teen things, and now we want to explore, like, what does it mean to father someone in their 20s who’s going through all kinds of things, and he’s going through all kinds of things, and what does family mean?”
He noted that the “father-daughter dynamic” is one the pair of them “play very well and are very interested in”.
However, David insisted the series will go beyond that, particularly with Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne on board.
He added: “At its core, it has an incredible propulsive engine with action and entertainment, and Jack Thorne is writing it, who is a master. And I’m just so excited for us to start working.”
The duo’s upcoming series from A24 has been revealed as a spy drama.
Netflix previously teased: “In the series, disgraced FBI agent turned security expert Matt Wolfe (Harbour) is drawn back into the world he left behind when his estranged daughter, Rebecca (Brown) — now an FBI agent determined to follow in his footsteps — vanishes on a mission, forcing him to return to a field that has evolved beyond him.”
David and Millie were the subject of much speculation during the final season of Stranger Things, after reports she filed a harassment and bullying complaint against him ahead of production for season five.
He previously told Variety the report was a “weird thing” which “came out in a weird way”, and added: “Straight up, Millie and I are working on several …
“You’ll see more of me and Millie — 10 years wasn’t enough. There is a special bond there. I love her. She loves me.”
David insisted it is normal to get involved in “arguments and disagreements” with colleagues who have had a close working relationship for so long.
He added that they found it easy to resolve their differences once there were no other people involved.
He explained: “It’s simple. It was just a simple rupture-and-repair thing that, once we cleared everybody out of the way and talked to each other, we’re fine.”
