According to sources, the altercation began over a senior citizen seat. Sharma was allegedly slapped and pushed during the exchange, causing him to fall on the floor of the train and suffer head injuries. Metro staff took him in an ambulance to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where he was declared dead, the FIR said.

The case was registered on October 9 at the Supreme Court Metro police station on a complaint filed by Sharma’s mother, Durga Sharma. The FIR said police booked the accused under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and Section 3(5) on common intention.

Police sources said Sanjay Pratap Singh is a former senior IAS officer who was earlier arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in an alleged bribery case. His son is said to be a lawyer practising in the Supreme Court, they said. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the altercation and Sharma’s death, and further details about the sequence of events are awaited.

The case relates to the death of Pawan Sharma after an alleged assault during a dispute over a reserved seat in a Metro train, with police now investigating the roles of the former IAS officer and his son.
