A 15-year-old boy has remained missing for nearly three days after he fell into an open drain in Delhi’s Jasola while trying to retrieve a kite, prompting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to suspend a junior engineer for dereliction of duty.

Mithun, a Class 8 student, went missing on August 22 morning. As of Monday evening, there has been no trace of him despite an extensive search and rescue operation.

The incident has drawn the intervention of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who sought details from the chief secretary on the jurisdiction of the drain and also directed that the officer found responsible for the lapse be suspended.

Following the direction, the MCD suspended a junior engineer with immediate effect for alleged dereliction of duty. The civic body said disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the official.

Meanwhile, the multi-agency search operation involving the Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rescue personnel and divers was launched following the incident.

However, there was still no trace of the teenager by Monday evening, nearly 60 hours after he went missing.

A video purportedly showing Mithun’s father searching for his son in the drain with a stick in his hand also surfaced on social media.

The video shows the distraught father entering the drain himself as rescue teams continued their search.

Mithun’s family is originally from Uttar Pradesh. His parents and other family members live in the area and work as labourers in Delhi.

The search for the teenager was continuing as authorities worked to trace him in the drain.
