Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against Trinamool Congress leaders Derek O’Brien, Abhishek Banerjee, Humayun Kabir, Baisanor Chattopadhyay and others following a confrontation during the removal of an unauthorised signboard from a building on Camac Street on Thursday afternoon.
The incident took place at Camac Street, which houses the office of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) personnel, accompanied by Kolkata Police, reached the building to remove a signboard carrying the words “All India Trinamool Congress.”

According to Kolkata Police, the KMC had submitted a written request seeking police assistance to carry out the removal of the unauthorised hoarding.
Police claimed that the TMC leaders and their supporters formed an unlawful assembly and obstructed police personnel and KMC officials from performing their duties.
The FIR was registered at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station under Sections 191(2), 191(3), 190, 121(1), 74, 3(5) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police have also said that personnel were assaulted during the confrontation.
NOTICE LACKED RELEVANT DETAILS: O’BRIEN
However, TMC leader Derek O’Brien rejected the allegations and accused the civic authorities and police of acting illegally. Speaking about the incident, O’Brien claimed that the KMC arrived at around 3.30 pm with an “illegal notice” that was unsigned and lacked relevant details.
He reported that although the notice mentioned an attached photograph, no photograph was provided.
O’Brien also criticised the police deployment in a post on X, questioning the use of public resources to remove the signboard. He wrote, “Mission Absurd. Policemen on taxpayers’ money. All sent in to remove one signboard of a political party.”
O’Brien said TMC leaders and workers spent more than an hour trying to explain their objections before police entered the building. He claimed that more than 150 police personnel entered the premises and “pushed and shoved” TMC workers on the staircase.

“Abhishek was also there,” O’Brien said, adding that he believed the action was deliberately carried out ahead of the TMC’s annual students’ rally scheduled for Friday.
The TMC leader also accused the BJP and what he called the BJP’s “B-team” of being behind the action. He further claimed that 10-15 TMC workers had been picked up and said he would go to the police station over their detention.
IndiaToday couldn’t independently verify the allegations made by O’Brien. Police are expected to examine CCTV footage and other evidence as part of the investigation.
